OPTN/UNOS Addressing Transplant Needs in Hurricane-Ravaged Area

The national Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), administered by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), is contacting and offering any available assistance to transplant centers and organ procurement organizations in the areas most affected by Hurricane Katrina. The OPTN will take any possible measure to assure that transplant candidates and recipients receive medical services with the least possible disruption, and to facilitate lifesaving organ donation.

A few transplant centers in the affected area are not performing transplants at present, and coordination of organ donation is disrupted in some areas as well. The OPTN will help members transfer candidates to active transplant programs or make alternative arrangements to place donated organs.

In addition, some transplant candidates and recipients may have relocated due to the hurricane. The table below contains contact information for transplant programs in areas near the storm-damaged region, should transplant candidates or recipients need short-term medical care. Transplant candidates and recipients may also call UNOS' toll-free Patient Services line, (888) 894-6361, which is staffed from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time Monday through Friday. Information will be updated as circumstances warrant.

The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) is operated under contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Division of Transplantation by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). The OPTN brings together medical professionals, transplant recipients and donor families to develop organ transplantation policy.
